(Religious Ballet Dancer)

Uday Shankar was a gem in the field of classical dancing. He was the person who gave introduction to Indian classical ballet dancing to Europe and America. He created a special mythological ballet in classical dancing.

Uday Shankar was born at Udaipur in Rajasthan on 8th December 1900. His father was Diwan of Jhalawar. He studied from Uttar Pradesh and later joined to J.J. School of Arts. He was the elder brother of Pd. Ravi Shankar, the wizard of Sitar. Uday Shankar was genius in both painting and dancing. He was sent to London. There he practised and showed many of his performances. He formed Parsi based dance troupe. He became popular and lovers of dancing waited for his show. He returned back to India and established ‘Uday Shankar Culture Centre’. There he started to give dancing training to his disciples.

He prepared Tandav, Shiv-Parvati, Lanka-Dahan, Rythme of Life, Ramlila, Shramyatra and his troupe performed these ballets. He also remixed western dancing arts in his dancing. He also made a film ‘Kalpana’. He was dedicated to his dancing and proved that men dancers could also be equally fit like women in dancing.

Seeing his excellence in dancing Uday Shankar was conferred ‘Padma Bhusan’ by Indian Government in 1971. He died in Calcutta in 1977.
