Tenzing Norgay was the first man to scale the highest peak of the world, the Mount Everest at the height of 8,848 metres. He achieved this feat together with Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand. In this way his name, Tenzing has been written in golden letters in the history of world.

Tenzing was born in 1914 in Nepal. He belonged to a poor family and acquired the Indian citizenship in 1933. From his childhood, he had a passion for mountaineering. At the age of 18, he started his practise of mountain climbing. He had the qualities of efficiency, courage, patience and determination, which helped him to climb the Everest. Keeping dogs and drinking coffee was his favourite hobby. He showed excellence in the field of mountaineering. So he was appointed Director in the ‘Himalayan Mountaineering Institute’ at Darjeeling in West Bengal in 1954. He trained a number of Indians in the field of mountaineering. To give due recognition to his unique talent, the Governments of India, Nepal as well as England conferred honours on Tenzing. He was awarded with title of ‘Padma Bhusan’, Gold Medal and Star of Nepal. He died in 1986 leaving behind a golden history in mountaineering.
