Sitara Devi is the famous mythological as well as film Kathak dancer.

Sitara Devi was born in early 1920’s. Her first Guru was her father Sukhdev Maharaj. After that her other Gurus were Achchan Maharaj, and Lachchu Maharaj. Once when she was eleven years old girl she danced in front of Gurudev Rabindra Nath Tagore, Smt. Sarojini Naidu in Atia Begun Palace. Small Sitara Devi got loads of appreciation and congratulations. Since then she has never looked back. She danced and danced. She got married and had three children. She practised, danced and gave performance after performance.

Dancing was not only her hobby but an urge of internal soul. She brought name and fame to Kathak dancing abroad also. She has performed in Britain, Africa, Europe etc.

For decades, she has performed at many concerts and festivals in India and abroad including her performances in the Royal Albert and Victoria Hall, London and the Carnegie Hall, New York. Over the years, she had been conferred a number of awards including Sangeet Natak Academi Award (1969), the Padma Shri (1973), Kalidas Samman (1995) and Nritya Nipuna. However, her greatest award is the recognition she received from R. N. Tagore as she was described Nritya Samragini when Sitara Devi was only sixteen years old.
