Rakesh Sharma
(First Indian Astronaut)

Squadron leader Rakesh Sharma is the first Indian, who went to space and looked at our Earth from there as blue ball in the space.

Rakesh Sharma was born on 13th January in 1949 at Patiala in Punjab. His mother was Tripta Sharma and father Devendranath Sharma. He was commissioned in Indian Air Force on 13th June 1970. He got his space training with Ravish Malhotra and went into space with Yuri Maleshave and Genadi, the Russian space astronaut. He went to space in April 1984 by the space craft Soyuz T-ll from Russia. From the space he talked to the Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. Indira Ji asked from the Earth to Rakesh “How does our Earth looks from there in the space?” He promptly answered, “Our Earth is looking beautiful like a blue ball from space.” That was really a historic time for India. All Indians feel proud that an Indian has also went into the space. He has been awarded Ashok Chakra, Order of Lenin, Hero of Soviet Union and Gold Medal from Aero Club of India.

Rakesh Sharma retired with the rank of Wing Commander. He joined the Hindustan Astronautics in 1987 and served as Chief Test Pilot in HAL Nasik Division until 1992, before moving on to Bangalore to work as the Chief Test Pilot of HAL. He retired from Test flying in 2013.
