(Pioneer of Heart Transplant)

Dr. Panangipalli Venugopal is a well known cardiac surgeon. He was the chief of the “Cardiothoracic Sciences Centre” at “All India Institute fB of Medical Sciences, New Delhi”. Prof. Venugopal is the pioneer of the heart transplant in India. He put India on the international map of heart transplant.

Dr. P. Venugopal has born on 6th July, 1942 at Rajahmundry (Andhra Pradesh). He started his brilliant academic career at school and college at his home-town. Then he joined the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences and passed out with Gold Medal. He persued his postgraduate career in surgery at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research at Chandigarh and completed his Master of Surgery (M.S.) with Gold Medal.

Then he joined the Faculty of All India Institute of Medical Sciences and remained dedicated to that institution ever since. He became Chief of the Cardiothoracic Sciences Centre in February 1992.

In 1974, he established the open heart surgery programme at All India Institute of Medical Sciences under the stewardship of Professor N. Gopinath. His team performs the largest number of open heart surgical procedures, normally about 3000 in a year.

Dr. R Venugopal is a member of various National and International Surgical Societies. He and his team were able to establish the Cardiac Surgical facilities at the Super Speciality Hospital at Puttaparthy (A.R). He has published more than 350 papers highlighting the states of Cardiac surgery in India. During this period, he has been associated with the training of more than 100 Cardiothoracic Surgeons, who are working in various hospitals in India and abroad. He has performed fifteen successful cardiac transplantations.

He has been decorated with many awards and honours like “Indira Priyadarshini Award”, “Award of Excellence” ’’Great achiever of India 1994 Award”, ‘Vijaya Ratna Awards’, etc. He has also been awarded with “Padma Bhushan Award” by Govt, of India in 1998. He had been appointed as DEAN of AIIMS.

Apart from being one of the longest serving doctors at the institute, he is also credited with being the first Indian to perform a heart transplant.
