Munshi Premchand
(Upanyas Samrat)

The writer of many Hindi Upanyas, Munshi Premchand was the ‘Father of Hindi Fiction’. Hindi fiction blossomed into full-fledged literary form by his inner talent. He was pioneer of modern Hindi and Urdu social fiction.

Premchand was born in 1880 in Varanasi (U.R) to a poor family. His real name was Dhanpat Rai and wrote in Urdu under the assumed name of Nawab Rai. He led a financially very hard life till his death. His writings usually pointed to a moral or psychological truth. His stories were finely knited, showing the pathetic conditions of the poor people reflecting his own life conditions. He wrote nearly 300 stories and novels. His career started with the publishing of his first story ‘Sansar Ka Sabse Anmol Ratna’ in Jamana in 1901. His first collection of short stories ‘Soz-I-Watan’ was published in 1907. Premchand represented the spirit of his times, which marked a tension between urbanization and uneasy modernism. Much of Premchand’s best works is to be found among his 250 or so short stories, collected in Hindi, under the title ‘Manasarovar’. These stories depicted on a notably wide range of northern Indian life for their subject matter. Among his best known novels are Sevasadan, Rangmanch, Chattan, Nirmala, and Godan. During the last days of his life, he was writing so curiously as to finish all those ideas which he wanted to write. He died of tuberculosis in 1936. In the year 1980,100th Birth day of Upanyas Samrat was celebrated throughout the Country. Godan was picturised and Nirmala was produced as a TV serial.
