Mokshegundam Visvesvaraya was one of the founders of modern India. He was India’s leading engineer, educationist, statesman and administrator. He combined vision with achievement.

Dr. M. Visvesvaraya was bom on 15th Sept. 1861 at Muddenahalli in Karnataka. He belonged to a poor family. He studied engineering and also travelled in Europe. He was the architect of the Krishnarajasagara Dam, which is one of the biggest dams in India. He laid great emphasis on education and industrialisation of India. He started several institutions like University of Mysore, the State Bank of Mysore and industries like Bhadravati Iron and Steel Works. His agenda for new independent India in the form of First Five-year Plan was to industrialise it. His message was “Industrialise or Perish”. He worked tirelessly and enthusiatically for a strong industrialised India by his amazing genius for administration. One of his famous quotes is “Remember, your work may be only to sweep a railway crossing, but it is your duty to keep it so clean that no other crossing in the world is as clean as yours”.

Visvesvaraya also worked as a Dewan for the Nizam of Mysore. His selfless devotion earned him the country’s highest honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1955.

He left for heavenly abode on April 14, 1962 at the age of 101.
