Milkha Singh is a well known athlete of India. He had a marvellous running speed on the tracks. So he is also known as the ‘Flying Sikh’. At present Milkha Singh is fully dedicated to the promotion of sports in India.
Milkha Singh was born in western Punjab of undivided India in 1935. His athletic career began when he joined the army at the age of 18. On joining the army, Milkha Singh paid special attention to athletics and started to train himself for 400 metre race on tracks. Hard work and determination bore fruit. He got fame for setting up two new records in 400 metre and 200 metre race respectively.
Milkha Singh won a gold medal in the 400 metre race in 4th Asiad held at Jakarta in Indonesia. He unfortunately missed a medal as he got in the fourth place in the 1960 Olympics. He also established a new national record of 47.5 second in 400 metre race.
Seeing his excellence in field of sports Government of India conferred ‘Padmashri’ on him. His dedicated career as an athlete, will always inspire the young sportspersons. He is a patriot of our country.
As of 2013, he is the only Indian male athlete to win an individual atheleties gold medal at a Commonwealth Games.
