(Swimming Champion)

Mihir Sen was the first Asian swimming champion to cross the English Channel. He had fascination for swimming and went ahead to establish a record in swimming the longest distance.

Mihir Sen was born in Purulia (W.B.) in 1930. He was a lawyer by profession at Kolkata High Court. His greatest hobby was swimming. To satisfy his inner urge for swimming he took training and became a matchless swimmer of his time. He was an extraordinary swimmer and established five important records. He crossed English Channel, Palk Strait, Gibralter, Wasphorus and Panama Canal.

He crossed the longest water bodies and gained admiration. He earned a place in Guinness Book of World Records.

Seeing his tremendous excellence in swimming, he was awarded “Padmashree” in 1959 and ‘Padma Bhushan’ 1967. He became a pride patriot of India. After leading a memorable life, he died in 1997.
