The month of Magh in the Hindu calendar year is one of the most sacred months for a pious Hindu. One of the most justifiable reasons for it is the celebration of Mauni Amavasya. It falls on the fifteenth day of the dark fortnight of Magh. It is a unique festival of Hindus because it is the only day in a calendar year’s festival when holy men and devouts remain silent. Bathing in religious rivers like Ganges, visiting temples and religious shrines, and listening to discourses by holy men are considered as a part and parcel of the festival.
At Allahabad, where rivers Ganga and Yamuna meet, Magh Mela is organised and the plain is thronged by millions of devotees who come to have a holy dip at the confluence of Ganges and Yamuna. The holy men and Naga sadhus take bath here. Traditionally, on this day, Lord Vishnu is worshipped and the ‘Peepal Tree’ is religiously circumambulated. The reason behind observing silence on this day is to sharpen the power of concentration and to live in total communion with the Lord Almighty.
