Mahasweta Devi
(The Great Writer and Activist)

Mahasweta Devi well known is a human right activist and writer. She took up the cause of the oppressed and the downtrodden of society by writing for the liberation of bonded and unpaid labour. Mahasweta Devi formed a platform on 1st May 1980, known as Bonded Labour Liberation Organisation.

Mahasweta Devi was born in 1926 in Dacca. Her parents were literary people. Her father was an eminent writer. So she was inspired by him and inherited literary activity. She grew up in a home of intellectuals. She studied in Kolkata and Vishwa Bharati University. After completing her studies she joined in an administrative job in Post and Telegraph Department in 1949 but she left it and joined as an English teacher. She was also a rural reporter of Bengali Daily ‘The Jugantar’. Wherever she saw violation of human rights, like that of an unpaid and bonded labourer or atrocities against women, she wrote fearlessly raising protest. Her writings have brought a new hope to the battered humanity. She has written 42 novels, 15 collection of stories and books for children. Along with Swami Agnivesh she organised the welfare societies to tribal and oppressed groups to enable them to fight for their basic human rights. She was honoured with Magsaysay Award, a prestigious award for human rights activist in 1997 and Gyanpeeth Award, a highest honour for literature in 1996.
