(The Spirit of Aurovil)

Shri Aurbindo Ghosh was a great revolu-tionary, spiritual yogi and philosopher. He is known for his ‘Aurovil’ town near Pondicherry.He turned a dull town Pondicherry into a pilgrimage and romantic town of India.

Shri Aurbindo was bom in Kolkata on 15th August 1872. He belonged to a rich family. At the age of seven, Aurbindo was sent to England for study. He proved to be an excellent student and learnt many languages. He passed ICS examination but anyhow did not join the administrative service. In England he joined an Indian secret assembly ‘Kalam Aur Kataar’ and worked for India’s freedom. Then at the age of 21, he returned back to India and joined the service of ‘Baroda Raj’. Again at the age of 34, he joined as the first teacher of National College of Kolkata. He quit this job also to serve and free motherland. He became leader of National Congress and wrote editorial essays in ‘Vande Mataram’. He added his bit to the freedom movement.

Later he moved to Pondicherry in 1901 and remained there till 1950. He also wrote books like Divine life, Savitri, Ved Rahasya etc. To remember this great soul an ‘Aurovile township was established near Pondicherry on 26 February 1968 which is a place, worth seeing.
