(Messiah of Poor)

M. G. Ramachandran was popular leader and filmstar of Tamil Nadu. His deep emotion for poor and tender heart led him to a grand success. He was considered as an incarnation of God in Tamil Nadu. He worked earnestly for the state and his labour was awarded as “Bharat Ratna” in 1988 by Government of India.

Ramchandran was born in 1917 in Kendi town of Sri Lanka. In his childhood his father passed away and his mother settled in Tamil Nadu. He belonged to a poor family. He studied till class 3 and started earning his bread and butter. M. G. R. never forgot his days of misery and so he developed a niche for poor and helped them in any possible way. He was employed by a drama company and visited many places. In his leisure time he kept on reading books. In this way he earned knowledge of history and geography In 1935 he acted with great interest in the film “Rajkumari” and he became a famous actor. He married actress V. N. Janaki.

His fate turned other way in politics. He was elected as a member of legislature assembly in 1963. But he entered into active politics in 1971. He founded a new party named “Anna Dravida Munniatta Kazagam”. In 1977, M. G. R. formed Govt, and after sometime he renamed his party as “All India Anna Dravida Munniatta Kazagam”. In this way M. G. R. became a popular actor, leader and politician. Surely, M. G. R. had a rare combination of greatness with humility. He died in 1987 after a prolonged illness.
