Mahesh Chandra Mehta, India’s Mr. Clean is an advocate, who helps to create a healthy environ-ment of our surrounding. He has a strong sense of well being for us and our environment. He is the person who has challenged the government and thousands of industries in Supreme Court.

Mehta was born in the Pir Panjal Mountains of Jammu and Kashmir to a farmer’s family. He went to school, walking through lush woods and rivers. He developed love and appreciation of environment from his childhood. After graduation he got his law degree at Jammu University. Here he established a reputation as a social activist. Then he moved to New Delhi as a practising lawyer. He has a niche for society and environment. So he thought of doing a little bit for the cause of it. Once, a stranger criticised lawyers as greedy and not needy. Mehta heard the statement and took the criticism to heart. He started doing freelance investigation for the cause of society and environment. At the same time, he won freedom for almost 200 children, imprisoned illegally in Orissa and abused by adult inmates. He travelled the red sand stone gateway, Agra to see the polluting environs around Taj Mahal. He observed that more than 2000 industries are operational near Taj Mahal without any pollution control equipment. After that he petitioned in the Supreme Court to take action. Today’s CNG bus drive in Delhi, shifting of polluting industries are the outcome of Mehta’s effort.

Rightly Mehta was awarded the renowned Goldman Environmental Prize in 1996 and Asia’s Nobel Prize, the Magasaysay Award for Public Service in 1997. He hopes to use the prize money to establish a non-profit environmental research institute in India for the cause of Environment.

M.C. Mehta is a public interest-attorney in India. His landmark cases are Ganges Pollution Case, Delhi Sewage Treatment Plant Case, Environmental Awareness and Education Case, Delhi Ridge Case, Dust Pollution Case, Ground water Pollution Case, Antop Hill Case, Coasted Areas Case amonst others.
