Melody Queen Lata Mangeshkar, who has held audience worldwide in a thrill for over five decades has awarded, thenation’s highestcivilian honour the “Bharat Ratna" in the year 2001. The voice of her songs are our nation’s emotions. She expresses the joys and sorrows, devotional, romantic and melancholic songs in a melodious voice. She has found realisation of God as well as herself through her music.

Lata Mangeshkar was born on 29th September, 1928 in Indore (M.P). She learnt her early music lessons from her father. She was thrown into the rough and tumble of life at the tender age of 13. She brought up her family of five siblings single handedly. She has remained unmarried and has spent her life behind the microphone. She has sung over 30,000 songs in almost all the main languages of India. Her name has appeared in the Guinness Book of World Records, as the singer of the highest number of songs. She is the recipient of many awards and honours like Padma Shri, Filmfare Award, Dada Saheb Phalke Award etc. and a Rajya Sabha berth too. She sang songs, which spans from Madhubala to Preity Zinta. Her famous songs like A aane wala, Yeh zindagi usi ki hai, Ae m dil-e-nadan, Seeli Seeli, Dill hoon-hoon kare, Jiya-Jale Jan Jale, are time tested. But her favourite song is “Kanton se khinch ke ye anchal”. Even at the age of 86, Lata’s voice sounds as fresh as a bubbling brook, and trademark of sweetness of voice like a nightingale. She manages to maintain the magic of her voice by doing regular practise. She claims “the moment one is satisfied, one tends to lose all desire to go on”. Her songs have consistently expressed the joys and sorrows of the common Indian. She has proved that devotion and dedication to work can project a person to his ultimate goal and satisfaction. She attributes her extraordinary achievements to her Pita, Gurujan, Ishwar ki kripa and love of the audience which has seen her through all these years. She is a patriot in true sense.

This nightingale of India is also the redepient of awards like Bharat Ratna, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, Maharashtra Bhushan Award, NTR National Award, ANR National Award, National Film Awards etc. In 1984, the State Government of Madhya Pradesh instituted the Lata Mangeshkar Award’ in honour of Lata Mangeshkar. The Government of Maharashtra also instituted this award in 1992.
