Kaka Hathrasi was a well known writer of limericks. He wrote poems which brought laughter, amusement and sarcasm on contemporary situations.
Kaka was born on 18th September 1906 at Hathras (U.P). His childhood was laden with misery. After his birth, his father died due to plague. His mother Burfi Devi brought him up. His real name was Pravulal Garg. He got admitted in class I, serving as a hawker. At the age of 14-15, he became a clerk.
He was a versatile person. He was also interested in dramatics and music. He also wrote books like ‘Sangeet Sagar’, ‘Sangeet Visharad’.
Kaka Hathrasi was a person with musical and amusement bent. He used to write laughter poems on helplessness of person’s capacity. He has also shown his excellence in painting and dramatics and won many prizes. He got many awards like ‘Pladmashri’, ‘Honourary Citizenship’ etc. Kaka Hathrasi died on 18 Sep 1995, leaving behind his immortal name in laughter poems.
Kaka died on his birthdate at the age of 89. September 18 was declared ‘Hasya Divas’ (Humour Day) in his memory and a park in New Delhi was named ‘Kaka Hathrasi Udyaan’.
