Indira Priyadarshini was the first lady Prime Minister of India. She was one of the great courageous ladies in India. She led our country courageously in different turmoils.

Indira Gandhi was bom on 19th November 1917 in Allahabad. She belonged to a very rich and educated family. She was the only child of her father Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. She had a very lonely childhood because her mother kept ill and father languished in jail. She couldn’t get very much of formal education due to unfavourable circumstances. But she was very lucky to see and meet great personalities from all over the world with her father. When her father was in jail, he used to teach world history to Indira through letters, bo she got a wide spectrum of experiences in her early life.

In 1959 she was elected a member of Congress Committee. After her father’s death, she became the minister of Information and Broadcasting in the Lai Bahadur Shastri Government. After demise of Shastriji she became Prime Minister in 1965. Indira split the Congress party in 1969; walked away with its base. She won a spectacular war for India in 1971 and Bangladesh came into existence. On 12th June, 1975, Allahabad High court declared election of Mrs. Gandhi to the Lok Sabha invalid on the ground of corrupt election practices. On June 26, 1975 she advised President to declare emergency and it was declared. People concluded that interned emergency was declared not because of any internal danger to the nation but it was an interned danger to the leadership of Mrs Gandhi. She lifted emergency in January 1977 and declared general election. She herself lost the election from Rae Bareli and her Congress party also lost power in centre. Again she came into power in January 1980 after winning general election. Indira, overturned the Allahabad High Court judgment against her and imposed emergency. Though she lost the 1977 elections but she fought back to power later. She suffered a major set back due to her son Sanjay Gandhi’s death. In June 1984 “Operation Blue Star” was performed under her regime and she made many enemies. The day before her death, Indira Gandhi visited Orissa on 30 Oct, 1984 where she gave her last speech, “I am alive today, I may not be there tomorrow. I shall continue to serve till my last breath and when I die, every drop of my blood will strengthen India and keep a united India alive.” She was assassinated by her own bodyguards on 31 Oct 1984.
