E. V. Ramaswamy Naicker is known as Periyar, and he was a radical social reformer. He was also active in the freedom struggle, participating in the non-coopera-tion movement, offering satyagraha and defending khadi.

Periyar Ramaswamy Naicker was bom in 1879 in Tamil Nadu. He lost his father in his young age and had to work as an assistant to a stone mason. Ramaswamy married Smt. Nagamani in 1899. Ramaswamy was a bom rebel; struggled for justice. He was a self-taught and self-guided student. He closely observed that nonsense was going on in the name of God. So he became engaged in socio-religious transformation movement. He believed in basic human rights for the most needy and totally denied the existence of God.

Periyar was an Indian National Congress worker and actively participated in the Indian freedom movement. He left the congress because of a difference of approach with Gandhijee. Later on he joined the Justice Party and became chairman of the party in 1938. He converted Justice Party into Dravida Kazhagam. He became an undisputed leader of “Sudra” people. He also supported the cause of women’s rights. He advocated for widow remarriage and intercaste marriage and banned Devadasi culture in temples. Periyar had written a book “The true Ramayana”. He died at the age of 94 in the year 1973.
