(The Maker of Artificial Genes)
Hargobind Khorana was the renowned biochemist of the world and the maker of Artificial Genes. He was awarded the Nobel prize in medicine shared with Robert W. Holley and Marshail Nirenberg.
Hargobind was born in a village of Punjab (now in Pakistan) in 1922. His family in the village was the only literate family. Khorana studied at Punjab University and moved to England in 1945, on getting Government scholarship. In 1959 he got married to a Swiss lady. Dr. Khorana headed the Organic Chemistry Group of Common Wealth Research Organisation. He adopted American citizenship and joined as the staff of Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Dr. Khorana found the secret of the DNA code of life. The knowledge of genetic code ' opened a new branch of Science called ‘Genetic Engineering’. This could lead to altering the genes in DNA and helped to create new forms of life. It is also now possible to cure genetic diseases by repairing the defective gene.
He had been awarded many International awards like Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1968, Gairdner Foundation International Award, Louiza Gross Horwitz Prize, Albert Laskar Award for Basic Medical Research and Padma Vibhushan by the Government of India.
He died of natural causes on November 9, 2011 in Concord, Massachusetts at the age of 89.
