(The Hockey Wizard)

He was called as Hockey Wizard and mesmerised the world with his playing talent. His scoring a goal in hockey was like child’s play. He helped his country in winning gold medals in hockey. He was rightly called ‘a legend’ and his game was described as a ‘juggling turn’.

Dhyan Chand was born in Allahabad (U.P) on 29th August 1906. From his early childhood his mind was engaged in sports and he joined army at the age of sixteen. He played hockey in army and proved a good player. He and his team won gold medal in Hockey at Amsterdam Olympics. After that he never looked back. He kept on mesmerising hockey audience. He was honoured with ‘Padma Bhushan’ by the Government of India. He won three successive gold medals in Olympics. He received honours from foreign countries also. In 1936, Berlin Olympic, he was honoured with ‘Olive Crown’ and in 1968, Mexico Olympic as ‘Distinguished Guest’. The greatest tribute was paid to Dhyan Chand by Adolf Hitler in Berlin Olympics by commenting “You are a Sepoy in the Indian Army, if you were a German, I would have made you at least a Major General”. He retired cis a major from army and established an institute for coaching the young hockey players. He died in 1979 at the age of 74.

National Stadium Delhi, where first Asian Games were held in 1951, has been named after Major Dhyan Chand. Now it is called Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium.
