Dhirubhai Ambani
(Creator of Shareholder Wealth)

Dhirajlal Hirachand Ambani was a catalyser of shareholder culture in India, through bonus issues and dividends. Ambani has proved that it requires great zeal and determination to grow into empire.

He was born on 1932 in Chorvad of Junagadh in Gujarat to a lower middle class parents. His father was a school teacher. He only got a education up to matriculation level. He started an entrepreneurial career from ground by selling bhujias to pilgrims at Mount Girnar over weekends. Then he travelled to Aden in Yemen, sensing a day to go global. He also took up a job filling petrol in a Shell Service Station. While watching the huge fuel tankers roll in, he became joyful with the idea of owning his own petroleum company. He finally returned to India with Rs. 50,000.

He has become the symbol of true entrepreneurial spirit in India. In three decades the spice trader has been able to create one of India’s largest private sector companies. His Reliance Industries has spread from fabrics to petrochemical.

Ambani will be best remembered for revolutionising India’s capital markets. From nothing at all, he generated $12 billion of wealth for those who put their faith and money in his enterprises. His belief in enhancing shareholder value goes back to a time when the term was unfamiliar to the Indian public. He was the first Indian to tap the international equity market. His acts were driven by a dream of complete self reliance of producing fabric from the most basic material, the crude oil. He died on 6th July, 2002.
