(The Celebrated Genius)

Dr. Chandra Shekhara Venkata Raman was one of the most genius scientists of his time. He was the first Indian scientist to receive a Nobel Prize in Physics. His discovery is known as the ‘Raman Effect’ was an extraordinary contribution in the field of Physics.

Dr. C. V. Raman was born on 7th November, 1888 in Tamil Nadu. Raman was very intelligent since his early childhood. He acquired his bachelor’s degree from Presidency college, university of Madras. He published his first paper at the age of 18. He did his Master degree in Physics and broke all previous records. During his 10 years of service in government of India, he continued his research and published about 30 papers. He took voluntary retirement from the

service and joined a teaching post in Calcutta University. He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Science by the Calcutta University in 1924. After that he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1928. The British government of India conferred him the title of ‘Sir’ in 1929. He had a deep aptitude for science. So he set up Reiman Research Institute in 1943 and conducted reseeirch work for the rest of his life.

For his discovery of Raman effect, he was awarded Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. In 1957, he was also awarded Lenin Peace Prize. In 1954 the Government of India also honoured him with the highest country’s award, the Bharat Ratna. His discovery of to Reiman effect was most valuable help in the Industrial development of the world.

When he was returning from London, he on was enjoying and praising the magnificent beauty of the vast Mediterranean sea around him. He wondered : Is the sea blue due to reflection of the blue sky? Perhaps water molecules are scattering the sun’s light, causing the blue colour. The idea seized him like a powerful emotion and he published article on the molecular scattering of light.

Life is best expressed in his own words : “I regard as the greatest feature of the world, Nature herself. She is the supreme artist, she creates forms of beauty, loveliness and colour, unsurpassable and this has been so from the beginning of time. She is the inspiration of not only of artists, painters, sculptures, and engineers, but also of men of Science.”

One day he collapsed in laboratory, the valves of his heart having given away. He was moved to hospital and was given few hours to live. He survived and a few days later refused to stay in the hospital as he preferred to die in the gardens of his institute surrounded by his flowers. He passed away from natural causes on 21 Nov 1970 at the age of 82 in Bangalore.
