Birsa Munda
(A Warrior of Tribars Rights)

Birsa Munda was the legend of tribal movement in India. He was also known as Birsa Bhagwan. Birsa Munda will be remembered for his fight for social and political equality, liberty and tribal dignity.

Birsa Munda was born in 1875 near Ranchi in Jharkhand. His family accepted Christianity. So Birsa was admitted in the German mission school. Before completing his education, Birsa joined Sardar movement and he had to leave the school. Gradually he developed anti-missionary feeling and started thinking for social, religious and political emancipation for the exploited tribal people. He convinced people to give up non-vegetarian food, alcohol and sacrificing animal to worship God. He encouraged people to protect and preserve the forest. He sensed that land and forest are fundamental rights of people. Birsa Munda started a new tribal cult known as “Birsait”, which gave importance to education, prayers, faith in nature and fighting superstition. The Birsait cult became popular and organised agitations for their forest and land right. Birsa had an excellent organising capability and remarkable awakening of consciousness for their fundamental rights. Munda became supreme leader of the exploited tribal people, popularity known as Birsa Bhagwan. In his 25 years of age, he gave a new life to the Mundas and other exploited cults. Birsa Munda will be remembered for the emancipation of tribal people out of ignorance.
