Baba Amte
(An Eminent Social Activist)

Baba Amte was an eminent social activist of India, whose message was “People for Peace”. This legendary activist of Anandvan had worked on many social topics like his mission to bring peace to the two quarreling countries.

He was born on 26 Dec. 1914 in Maharashtra. His real name was Murlidhar Devidas Amte. He was a lawyer by profession. He developed passion for down trodden of the society. He served his whole life for the cause of lepers. His working place was Shokavan Ashram in Delhi. He gave up the practice of law and undertook training in Kolkata, to treat Leprosy patients. Afterwards he opened a home called “Anandvan” for leprosy patients.

He had been awarded Padma Shri in 1971 and Danien-Dutton Award for Leprosy Aid in 1983. At the age of 93 years, also he was always ready for social service.

Baba Amte had a mission to go to Pakistan and spread a message of peace to Pakistan with India.

Baba Amte left for heavenly abode on 9th Feb. 2008.
