Babasaheb Bhivnrao Ramji Ambedkar was a towering leader of the untouchables At the same time he was a patriot scholar, thinker and founding father of the Indian Constitution. He was the main inspiration behind the inclusion of special provisions in the constitution of India for the development of schedule caste.

Bhimrao Ambedkar was bom on 14th April1891. He belonged to a poor Mahar family of Madhya Pradesh. From his childhood he had experienced bitterly the condemned life of untouchables. So he had a niche for untouchables. After matriculation he got married to Ramabai. In 1924 he did his Ph D and Bar-at~Law from London. He pleaded and won a murder case which brought him name and fame.

He was emancipator of the untouchables and crusader for social justice. Dr. Ambedkar was made president of Constitutional Committee and played a key role in the preparation of Indian Constitution. He was also the Law Minister of India from 1947-1951. He attended the Round Table Conferences in London as a representative of the depressed classes of India. Dr. Ambedkar along with 2 lakh followers embraced Buddhism in 1956 for hitting at the conscience of the Hindus. This widely learned man, crusader of downtrodden and father of Indian constitution passed away in 1956. Seeing his contribution, Indian Government posthumously awarded ‘Bharat Ratna’ in 1990.
